Who We Are
Our site in the heart of Moline’s Overlook District boasts two beautiful houses built in the late 1800s by Charles Deere, son of John Deere and second president of Deere & Company. Several generations of the Deere, Butterworth, and Wiman families have called these landmarks home, including Charles’ younger daughter Katherine Deere Butterworth and her husband, William. Katherine Deere Butterworth's community involvement and philanthropy led her to establish the William Butterworth Foundation in memory of her husband. Upon her death in 1953, her home became Butterworth Center, a civic center for cultural and educational activities. The Deere-Wiman House was bequeathed to the Foundation in 1976 by Pattie Southall Wiman, great-granddaughter-in-law of John Deere. Today, this legacy continues through the William Butterworth Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization that preserves the two historic homes and supports community outreach for education and the arts and provides free meeting space for more than 200 organizations each year.
What We Do
Our vision is one of a community that values its heritage, serves one another and finds joy in learning. Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House is an historic site and community center that honors our Deere Family heritage by supporting service, culture and education in the Quad Cities community.
