Opportunity Description:
Storm Drain Marking is an outdoor opportunity for volunteers who are interested in building a better community through environmental stewardship. The program is designed to promote water quality awareness by identifying local storm drains with a message "Drains to Waterways". Many are unaware that storm water run-off, and the material it contains, enters storm drains and goes directly to the nearest creek or stream without being cleaned. Marking storm drains helps to educate and remind the community that simple things such as picking up litter, or not dumping in the drain, helps to protect local water quality.
The Storm Drain Marking Program involves working with an abrasive brush, applying adhesive, removing general debris from the top of storm drains, and working in an outdoor environment where traffic may present a hazard and where the possibility exists, however slight, for injury to occur or for exposure to allergens. Protective gloves are provided to protect the hands of those applying adhesive and markers, and safety vests are provided all volunteers.
Volunteer Details:
- In most cases access to restrooms will not be readily accessible. There are a handful of food, gas stations and other similar retail near most locations if someone should need to use a restroom.
- Storm drains will be marked in groups of three to four individuals.
- Wear comfortable, closed toe, walking shoes.
- Clothing may become dirty. Those applying adhesive may have clothing that comes in contact with adhesive.
- Gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided.
Upon Arrival, Day of the Event:
- Volunteers will receive training on how to mark storm drains. Including a brief review of MSDS for the adhesive to be used for the storm drain marker, and how to properly don and doff gloves.
- Volunteers will be grouped and receive supplies for each group.
During the Event:
- Our Site Coordinator will be cruising through areas to be marked and taking pictures. If someone is injured or requires First Aid, the Coordinator will have a First Aid Kit on the truck. Groups will just need to call if they need assistance.
Upon Completion:
- Once groups have completed the storm drain marking, they should return to the starting point to return their supplies.
