Who We Are

The Putnam Museum and Science Center offers unique, immersive, hands-on learning experiences to visitors of all ages. To enhance learning opportunities and make them fun and memorable, the Putnam has the unique ability to utilize our Science Center, artifacts and exhibits, GIANT screen films, and hands-on programs.

Founded in 1867 as the Davenport Academy of Natural Sciences, the Putnam was one of the first museums west of the Mississippi River.

From its earliest beginnings over 150 years ago, the Putnam reflected the special interests of a vibrant community showcasing the collections of its citizens and providing a place to preserve the heritage of the region. The Putnam is dedicated to helping guests discover and explore in a friendly and engaging atmosphere and that is made possible with the help of volunteers. Volunteers are most important to the Putnam's ability to present quality exhibits and programs to community residents and out-of-town visitors.

What We Do

The Putnam brings to life a sense of place, time and purpose to ignite human potential and inspire our diverse community to learn about and care for our world and all its people. We foster appreciation for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM); our connections to world cultures past and present; and immerse visitors into the wonders of the natural world.
