Who We Are

2017-2018 offers another exceptional year to be a Fillmore Flyer. We are so excited to blast off in August and continue to build upon the success of previous years. As the new principal I am committed to continuing the implementation and maintaining the fidelity of the great programs and initiatives Fillmore has to offer. We are in year four of our Boystown implementation as well as year two of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) Procedures.We have amazing students here at Fillmore and we love to celebrate them and honor their accomplishments through our Positive Pre-referral program Monthly FAB 5 assemblies no referral celebrations High 5 Winners and much more. Fillmore continues to pride itself in preparing our students to be 21st century learners with our incorporation of interactive technologies such as Smart Boards Chromebooks and tablets into every classroom and researched based programs such as Lexia MackinVIA and ST Math. We also offer Google Expeditions through virtual reality goggles in our media center. We will continue to support and grow ALL learners with our incorporation of our grade level 30 minute walk to intervention reading block and a math intervention block with enrichment and extension opportunities. The staff at Fillmore is dedicated to giving their time and talents to ensure each student experiences academic emotional and social success every day. The knowledge that our staff has in the area of literacy instruction is exceptional. Fillmore teachers work hard to build the foundation to make sure our students are equipped for their future with the academic and social skills needed to be successful. We continue to focus our staff development efforts through weekly grade level collaborative teacher teams and our early out Wednesdays. Our staff is committed to continuing to close the achievement gap for our students. ? 2014-2015 Iowa Assessment Growth: 13% gains in Reading and 7.3% gains in Math. Fillmore had the largest reading gains in the District! 2015-2016 Iowa Assessments Growth: maintained 13% growth from previous year 3.1% gains in Math and 13.1% gains in science. ? 2016-2017 -50% decrease in our Out of School Suspensions and 24% decrease in our Office Referrals thanks to our successful and ongoing implementation of the Boys Town Model and PBIS implementation. ? 30 minutes of extra instruction are set aside each day for students needing extra support in reading and math. Students are placed in needs-alike groups and provided sharply focused instruction designed by our strongest teachers. ? Teachers continued to implement the 95% Group phonemic awareness and phonics instruction program with fidelity. ? Many students had their artwork displayed at the Figge Art Museum and around the city in other events this year. ? The WatchDogs program continued with many adult men volunteering. ? Additional incentives and events for students families and community members included monthly Fab Five Assemblies No Tardy Dance Parties Preferral Lunches with Ms. Asay quarterly STAR Luncheons for students without office referrals Flyers Club Mentor Program (GAP) Greater Achievement Program Coach Cole?s Boys Group sponsored by the YMCA free afterschool tutoring programs LEGO League CADS Esteem Team Kids in the Creek Buddy Bench Initiative monthly Title I events PTO sponsored free movie nights and student-led Spring conferences. ? Students in Fillmore?s Junior FIRST LEGO League created LEGO constructions that accounted for ?waste-wise? decisions that positively impact our Earth. Student teams made a mechanical garbage can a conveyor belt for sorting recyclables and other creations that they presented to John Deere Davenport Works employees. Fillmore is grateful for the generous donation by John Deere who has faithfully sponsored Fillmore kids and families for six years. Fillmore Elementary was the first school to be selected for the Putnam Museum?s Immersion Grant. Through the grant Fillmore?s 5th graders spent a week learning through hands-on activities at the Putnam. Fillmore?s Breakfast with Buddies boasts great success! Families of students and members from the community including Mayor Frank Klipsh school board members firefighters police officers many faces from the ASC the North High football players cheerleaders student council and the ROTC came and enjoyed breakfast and a special reading activity with their students. The morning was filled with many smiles and much laughter. It is a stellar and new tradition! 5th Grade Wax Museum- History came to life as our 5th graders transformed into a historical figure of their choice. Students chose a person they were interested in researched their lives and presented as that figure in character. These students did a phenomenal job and impressed their audience!! The ST Math mascot JiJi visited the students at Fillmore Elementary School. The students were so surprised and excited to see JiJi make an appearance at the Fab 5 assembly. JiJi was so excited to share the excitement and celebration of students work so hard at ST Math to make it to 100%. ST Math is an online math program game that students work to creatively solve math puzzles. Born Learning is a class offered to our parents at Fillmore through the United Way. The class is one hour per week for six weeks and discusses parenting strategies from birth to five years. We talk about nutrition social emotional skills behavior attendance and kindergarten readiness. We have a dinner after every class and parents interact/converse with their children during this time to practice positive mealtime behaviors. Kindergarten teachers Heather Brokaw and Kate Ross lead this class. Students at Fillmore Elementary who did not earn a referral for 1st or 2nd quarter got to celebrate with an extra recess ice cream sandwiches and a visit from the Quad City Mallards! Our excellent 2nd grade worked together to create art for our Fillmore Community. They studied mural and large sculptures from North American artists Diego Rivera Alexander Calder and Tony Carter. Each 2nd grade student made a contribution to help complete the paper mosaic peacock. Students in the Greater Achievement Program (GAP) program earned a celebration lunch and trip to see Big Nate at Circa 21 Theatre with teachers tutors Ms. Asay and Mr. Schneckloth. Pizza ice cream and a certificate announcement were involved with the celebration. 14 of the students in the GAP program increased their areading score to proficient! Fillmore has a new and engaging way of learning: Through Virtual Reality. Virtual Reality allows students to build background knowledge about a topic as they travel on Virtual Field Trips! The virtual field trips tie into the content in which they are learning for all grade levels. This virtual reality was provided by a SCRA grant!

What We Do

Fillmore Elementary School is a PreK-5th grade public school as part of the Davenport Community School District serving Northwest Davenport. All Fillmore students will have academic and social success through an instructionally rich environment and the Davenport Way.
